Are Podcasts Worth it to Grow your Business?

Many business owners are curious if their time invested in starting and producing a Podcast is worth it?

Based on the data and the tools now available to make production a breeze - we say YES.

But, keep in mind it depends on your niche and target audience.

First, we’ll review some stats we shared in a recent article to depict why a podcast might make sense for you…

  1. 39% of small and medium business owners listen to podcasts on the reg. So, if your target audience is business owners… it’s a great way to get discovered!

  2. Moreover, the larger the business, the higher the more decision-makers you have tuning in with 72% of business owners with 100-500 employees are listening to podcasts. So, if you are a service-based business looking to connect with bigger businesses - even more reason to launch one.

  3. Podcast ad revenue cleared $2 billion in 2022. Creating a successful Podcast and leveraging sponsorship could cut you a piece of that pie!

Now, another critical thing to consider is the ROI.

In order to calculate this, you’ll need to keep in mind the amount of time that you and / or your team is putting in to execute the Podcast.

Or, if you decide to hire a producer - the amount of money you’re investing in its production.

Then, we recommend thinking of it in terms of your sales process.

Typically, if your sales process has a “Discovery Call '' component, you or your sales team are spending time with 1:1 calls on a regular basis to prequalify and qualify people to use your services.

Well, a Podcast can be a tremendous way for you to share your message, your services, and your passion for what you do with hundreds or even thousands of prospects at once… a big, “work smarter” bonus!

In order to pull this off, you will need to make sure that your messaging is on point, your offers are irresistible, and you're reaching as many potential clients as you can through organic promotion and audience hacking.

At the end of the day, the goal is to create a successful means for you to get in front of many more potential clients in a 1:100+ level of efficiency. Sounds real nice, right?

Over time you will be able to see how many inquiries and ultimately conversions you are getting through your podcast audience. You’ll also be able to network with other businesses, grow your total audience, and build authority for your brand.

Regardless of if you are already putting out a dope track … aka podcast OR you are looking to get started, here are some big tips to consider to level-up your PodGame.

Know who the heck you are talking to and why.

You’ve heard this before. Know your audience! Who is your ideal client? Who do you want to work with? Take the answer to those questions and reverse engineer a topic and scope that will deeply resonate with your people. If you aren’t clear on this piece don’t take another step until you get clear. Time in business is your greatest asset - so, don’t waste it on a Podcast that isn’t going to make an impact for others and your business.

Building an audience is tricky.

On any platform. But, with all audience growth - consistency is the key. Commit to a schedule. Leverage tools to create a strategy and let the data of your listeners guide the way with your content. Some of the tools we love for creating a strategy: Buzzsumo for trending topics and ChatGpt for research and ideation! Stay on top of your content strategy by also keeping an eye on other leaders in your industry for inspiration on what things your audience resonates with the most.

Engage.

Podcasts are listened to for learning and inspiration - but, let’s face it - if it isn’t engaging and entertaining as well - nobody is going to look forward to hearing it! Come up with creative ways to encourage feedback. Run contests for listeners, ask for comments to questions, and get your people involved on your social media channels. The more you can take your people’s feedback and curate the show to their likes and dislikes - the more loyal your following will be.

Network.

Another one of our favorite parts about launching a Pod is that it’s an unmatched way to network with other businesses and potential customers. Through this process, that we call Outreach - you can unlock many benefits, including organic exposure and audience growth, and, best of all, you can make an even bigger impact on your audience by bringing in subject level experts or people with an inspiring story!

From 6 Listeners To 8 Figures: The Insurance Dudes Podcast

Let me take you back to February 2019, when I started a podcast with my friend Craig Pretzinger, named The Insurance Dudes. We had no grand plan or product in mind, just a mutual love for chatting with people and a desire to have some fun.

At first, we only had six listeners - yep, you read that right. But we weren't discouraged. We knew that we had something special, and we just needed to figure out how to get it out there.

After three months of sporadic releases, we realized we needed consistency if we were going to build an audience. So, we committed to releasing new episodes at the same time every week.

And it worked! By the six-month mark, we were seeing an increase of about 50 or more listeners added to every episode. We were stoked!

But that was just the beginning. In April 2020, we stumbled upon a process that was skyrocketing our own insurance agencies’ sales, so we decided to share it with other insurance agents.

So, we started doing weekly webinars, sharing our process with other agents, and helping them implement it in their own businesses. And the results were astounding because we had already built an audience. We discovered almost all of our sales came from people who had been listening to our podcast for a couple of months.

Within three years, we're on track to hit eight figures in sales - all thanks to our little podcast.

Who would have thought that something we started just for fun would turn into such a game-changer for our business?

The power of consistency, community, and sharing your expertise is truly remarkable. And it just goes to show that sometimes, the most unexpected paths can lead you to incredible success.

So, keep sharing your story, take risks, and most importantly, have some fun along the way. You never know where it might lead you!
